” The man upheld by God knows whom to fear most, whom to obey when his flesh resists and protests, and he knows the one for whom his soul longs and waits. The fears of his present fade and dissipate next to the light of his future.” (Marshall Segal)
He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.
Psalm 112:7-8
His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
We Look To You is the prayer of a Christian in a groaning world, longing for the Lord to return. It covers themes of longing for God to get rid of pain and temptation and struggle, and is a prayer for God to return and complete the work he has begun. The psalmist often had these emotions of looking around at the world in all its rebellion and wishing the Lord would fix it. This is our prayer too in the middle of pain and struggle.
2021 will unquestionably bring about much that might try to discourage, oppress and smother us. It is good to remember that joy not only comes with the morning, but sustains us through nights of sorrow — until bad news itself is a faint and harmless memory. The time will come when Christ will gather us together, and bring us home. We await that day.
