A new feature here at Rooted + Relevant is a series that highlights men whom I would consider some of the “best of the best” in the Church at large at what they do. But more specifically, these are individuals in the Church that have been a major influence to me in my spiritual maturity and theological development, as well as my honing of homiletic and hermeneutic precision.
Dr. Albert Mohler describes expository preaching as being marked by three characteristics: authority, reverence and centrality. That would certainly be validated by the work of the Spirit in the lives of the gentlemen listed below.
As the Pastor-Teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA, Dr. MacArthur has faithfully preached through the Scriptures for over 40 years. He is also President of The Masters College & Seminary, daily featured on Grace to You, and the author of many well known books. Dr. MacArthur has been instrumental in the transition of thousands from generic evangelicalism to historic Calvinism. Furthermore, he has gained a worldwide reputation as a meticulous exegete, being one of the few men in history who have preached verse-by-verse through the entire New Testament. Without the typical bravado of modern counterparts, he still captivates audiences with his careful and convincing analysis of the most minute parts of the text, characterized by clarity, courage, and conviction. His work been likened to the preaching of Martyn Lloyd-Jones, a most honorable comparison.
Dr. Piper served as the Pastor for Preaching at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis for 33 years, before transitioning to his role as the primary preacher and author at Desiring God Ministries. He is also the chancellor of Bethlehem Bible College & Seminary, and has authored over 50 books. Combining careful exegetical skills with profound thinking and burning passion, God has used his preaching ministry to bring many young evangelicals like myself into a fuller and richer appreciation of the Doctrines of Grace. His most famous the statement, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him,” is a theme he hits in nearly all his books and sermons.
Don Carson is research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL, and co-founder of The Gospel Coalition with Timothy Keller. He has authored numerous books, and recently edited The Enduring Authority of the Christian Scriptures. While not a pastor vocationally, Carson is a master of making the text “sing and sting”, as he famously puts it.
Pastor Begg has been in pastoral ministry since 1975. serving eight years in Scotland at both Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh and Hamilton Baptist Church. In 1983, he became the senior pastor at Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio. He has written several books and is heard on the radio program Truth For Life, which stems from the week-by-week Bible teaching at Parkside Church. Begg serves as a Council member of The Gospel Coalition.
Pastoring full time until 2010 at Trinity Reformed Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland, Edward Donnelley also held pastorates in Dervock and with a Greek speaking church in Cyprus. He has been described by Rev. Al Martin as the greatest current preacher in the English language.
Steven J. Lawson
Dr. Lawson has served as a pastor for thirty-four years in Arkansas and Alabama. Most recently, he was senior pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, AL. He is President and founder of OnePassion Ministries, hosts The Institute for Expository Preaching in cities around the world, is a Teaching Fellow for Ligonier Ministries, and is Professor of Preaching and oversees the D. Min. program at The Master’s Seminary. He is a man whom I would consider to be the premier surgeon of expositional preaching, who approaches the text with such reverence and the glory of Christ with such deference.
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
“The Good Doctor” was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. He famously defined preaching as “logic on fire.” Lloyd-Jones’ preaching style was set apart by his sound exposition of biblical doctrine and his fire and passion in its delivery, believing that preaching was the logical demonstration of the truth of a given passage of Scripture with the aid, or unction, of the Holy Spirit. His book, “Preaching and Preachers” is a most incredible book on homiletical development.
H.B. Charles, Jr.
H.B. Charles is pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. He is married to Crystal and they have three children. He took his first pastorate at the age of 17, and grew under the preaching of Dr. John MacArthur long-distance. His power and zeal for God’s Word is articulated with boldness and clarity.
